WHO: Sarasota Bay Estuary Program WHAT: Bay Guardians volunteer event and a native plant planting WHEN: Saturday, February 8th, 2014, 9am-12pm WHERE: 6106 63rd St E Bradenton, FL 34203
The Sarasota Bay Estuary Program’s Bay Guardians are teaming up with Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Department and Around the Bend Nature Tours for a native planting at Jiggs Landing in Bradenton. The Jiggs Landing property was purchased in 1944 by Al (Jiggs) and Agnes Metcalf and included a 7-acre piece of property. Their dream was to create a fish camp on the banks of the Braden River and they did so, creating a landmark that served Manatee County for more than 40 years. This event is suitable for ages 8 and up. Please wear a hat, sunscreen, close-toed shoes (old tennis shoes work great), clothes that can get dirty, work gloves and bring shovels (if you have them). Also, please bring a reusable water bottle if you have one to reduce our plastic pollution Bay Guardians shirts will be available for all volunteers! If you already have one please wear your shirt to the event. Parking is limited. Please carpool if you can! Lunch will be provided for all volunteers after the activities are done!

Mote Marine Laboratory will offer a FMSEA/FWC Aquatic Species Collection Workshop on Monday, February 17, 2014 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Weather permitting, there will be an optional sea grass exploration after the workshop, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

WHAT: 10-week, National Science Foundation-funded program for 10 undergraduate students WHEN: Deadline, February 15, 2014 WHERE: Mote Marine Laboratory, Sarasota, FL
This summer, Mote Marine Laboratory will host a 10-week, National Science Foundation-funded program focused on providing research experiences in estuarine science to 10 undergraduate students. Students will be paired with Mote scientists and conduct research on major threats to estuaries such as aquatic pollution, natural toxins, habitat alteration, and coral reef decline. Students will gain experience in science communication by presenting the results of their independent project in a manuscript-style research paper and orally at a laboratory-wide poster presentation. Students will also attend research seminars, workshops on career skills in science, and may have the opportunity to present their research findings at professional conferences.

WHO: Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program WHAT: CHNEP Charlotte Harbor Watershed Summit WHEN: March 25-27, 2014 WHERE: Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center (75 Taylor St., Punta Gorda)
The CHNEP hosts the Charlotte Harbor Watershed Summit every three years to learn about current research and restoration efforts, critical environmental issues affecting the Charlotte Harbor watershed and to review progress since the preceding summit. Summits are important in the CHNEP process of bringing public and private stakeholders together.

WHO: Florida Marine Science Educators Association WHAT: 2014 Annual Conference WHEN: April 24-27, 2014 WHERE: Panama City, FL
We look forward to seeing you at our annual conference scheduled for April 24-27, 2014 in Panama City Beach. Our theme this year, CSI: Panama City Science and Investigation, will highlight Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs and curriculum, both in research and education. The conference will include learning about the FSU Underwater Crime Scene Investigation Program, local STEM initiatives and sharing successes by researchers and educators from around the state. These efforts are essential to preparing future scientists and educators for our ever-changing natural, academic and economic environments.

WHO: Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program WHAT: J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel WHEN: Friday, May 30 WHERE: 1926 Victoria Ave, Fort Myers FL 33901-3414
The *CHNEP will hold its next Environmental Education Program on Friday, May 30 at J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel. Anyone interested in environmental education in southwest Florida should attend this CHNEP program, which provides an opportunity to network, collaborate, brainstorm and learn from many experts. This program is limited to 100 people. Tarpon Bay Explorers is offering a guided boat tour (at half the regular rate for 40 people) of Tarpon Bay.
