April Updates — FMSEA Florida Marine Science Educators Association

Hello Everyone! I hope you are all doing well; we have lots of great workshops and events this month, and our FMSEA Annual Conference is just a few weeks away! As always, if you have anything you would like me to share, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

2015 FMSEA Annual Conference Registration is still open for our 2015 FMSEA Annual Conference that will be held in Tampa April 30th – May 3rd! Registration link and hotel information can be found on our website, as well as a schedule of events. Come out and see all the latest and greatest in Marine Science Education in our state.

Sea Camp Marine Education Workshop: Big Pine Key Friday, April 24th through Sunday, April 26th Please see attached flyer for details and to register. The weekend also includes an Aquatic Species Collection Workshop!

Canoe and Kayak Training at Everglades Youth Conservation Camp EYCC (Everglades Youth Conservation Camp) is hosting Level 1 and 2 Kayak training, as well as Level 1 Canoe training in April in May. Please see attached flyer and contact Janice Kerber with questions, and to register.

These FREE classes are offered by Florida Department of Environmental Protection; please contact coral@dep.state.fl.us with any questions, and to reserve your seat. Classes will be held at the Biscayne Bay Environmental Center located at 1277 NE 79th Street Causeway, Miami, FL 33138. Class descriptions may be found here.

Great American Clean-up Saturday, April 18th is the Great American Clean-up, and there are sites all over the region to choose from! The attached flyer lists sites for Palm Beach County, and you can also check out the Keep America Beautiful website to find sites closer to you.

Science Without Borders Challenge Inspire your students to learn about science using art! The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation is proud to announce that “Reef Relationships” is the theme for this year’s Science without Borders Challenge. The Science without Borders Challenge is a yearly art competition that engages students to promote the need to preserve, protect, and restore the world’s oceans and aquatic resources. The international competition is open to all students 11-19 years old. To participate, challengers must submit an original piece of artwork by Monday, April 27, 2015. The first place winner will win a $ 500 scholarship. For more details, please view the contest rules and an entry form here.

FMSEA Awards FMSEA annually recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions towards moving the field of marine science forward, who provide outstanding marine science education and who want to share their successes with other practitioners.
