Title: Head Teacher/Assistant Director, Educational Programs
Position Description: Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate all CI teaching staff in Northeast Ohio. Work in collaboration with the Director of the Confucius Institute (CI) to develop Chinese language programs and curriculum following established University procedures. Assist in managing the day-to-day operations of the Confucius Institute. Interact professionally with all internal and external customers using strong interpersonal skills.
Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of other Languages (MTCSOL), Education, Chinese Studies, or a related field. Five years of experience in Chinese language teaching. Native or near-native fluency in both Chinese and English. For Chinese fluency, Grade A (Level 2) for native Chinese speakers or HSK Level 6 for non-native Chinese speakers. Possession of an Ohio license in teaching Chinese or an equivalent license from another state, or ability to obtain licensure within 9 – 12 months. Extensive knowledge of Ohio teacher certification process. Successful experience collaborating with colleagues from the People’s Republic of China. Strong work ethic, positive attitude and team-oriented professional work style. Ability to work independently, analyze problems and develop practical solutions. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and strong interpersonal skills. Motivated to learn and flexible to change. Attention to detail and deadlines with ability to manage competing demands for time.
Preferred Qualifications: Doctoral degree in MTCSOL, Education, Chinese Studies, or a related field. Previous teaching experience at Confucius Institutes or Confucius Classrooms. Record of publishing at peer-reviewed journals or presentation at peer-reviewed conference. Experience in organizing cultural and language programs. Previous experience studying in China. Experience leading and traveling overseas in groups or alone. Skills in desktop publishing, database management, and/or web site management skills.
