The University of British Columbia is accepting applications for one 12-month (renewable) lecturer position in Cantonese language, commencing September 1, 2015. This position is renewable on an annual basis, subject to excellent teaching performance, approval of the Department, and availability of funds. The successful candidate will teach a total of 24 credits over the 12-month period, of which at least 18 credits will be allocated for courses in first- and second-year Cantonese language (with the rest for courses on selected aspects of the culture and history of the Cantonese-speaking world, depending on the applicant’s area of expertise). The successful candidate will also be expected to lead in administration and development of the Cantonese language program.
Applicants are required to have native or near-native fluency in Cantonese and English, as well as university-level competency in Mandarin; a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics, Cantonese Language and/or Linguistics, Language Education, or related field; exceptional organizational skills; evidence of excellent teaching ability in Cantonese at the post-secondary level in an anglophone university and experience preparing teaching materials independently or collaboratively; a strong track record of full participation in team work and program affairs; evidence of commitment to teaching; and promise of educational leadership. Experience in program coordination and computer-assisted instruction will be assets. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an excellent record of teaching and service.
