North Carolina Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French (NC-AATF): Spotlight: Samia Kurani

Samia was born in Beirut, Lebanon, and has lived in the USA for 40 years. She was educated in private French schools from the ” Maternelle” to the ” Terminale.” Her native language is French.

She has the following degrees from American universities: BA and MA in Psychology and Counseling, as well as an international degree in teaching French language, French AP courses, French literature, and Psychology.

Presently, she is retired but still active in the academic field as a substitute teacher at a Catholic school. She has been in leadership roles as chairperson of Foreign Language departments and Director of Guidance and Counseling, and College Placement Advisor. She was certified as a Mentor and was recognized as a “Master” teacher.

She also worked at James Madison University in Virginia as an Instructor of French language and Education, teaching Secondary Education Techniques; at Mary Baldwin College in Virginia as a Residence Counselor and Instructor of French in the Exceptionally Gifted Program. Her experience in high schools was mainly in the private sector.

She spent several years in Beirut serving the same functions in education at the American Community School. She was also a translator and instructor of foreign languages at the American Embassy.

She has traveled extensively in Europe, Canada, the Middle East, Africa, and the USA.
